OpenAI is launching College Planner for ChatGPT for Teens in the coming weeks, targeting US high school students in grades 10 to 12 who are applying to four-year colleges. The tool integrates application requirements, deadlines, tasks, and financial aid information, including scholarships and fee waivers, into a single interface. Alongside this, OpenAI is rolling out study features like continuous multi-photo note capture on iOS, which converts paper notes into PDFs, as well as generated flashcards and interactive quizzes.

To address safety concerns and regulatory scrutiny, OpenAI is funding Boston Children's Hospital's Digital Wellness Lab for a three-year program to run an advisory council of approximately 22 teenagers. This council will test tools and recommend safety and literacy defaults. The company also shared engagement metrics, noting that nearly 1.2 million teens used Learning Visualizations and over 180,000 used Study Mode in a single week. Teens with access sent an average of 2.7 million more learning-related messages than those without, while average daily use remained under 15 minutes.

For edtech developers and practitioners, these updates signal OpenAI's intent to compete directly with specialized educational applications by building persistent workflows directly into ChatGPT. However, OpenAI has not announced any APIs, SDKs, or integration points for the College Planner, note capture, or safety features. Developers must currently treat these as closed, first-party features. Specialized education platforms can still differentiate themselves by offering verified institutional data, counselor collaboration tools, and direct integrations with school application systems, which OpenAI's current tool lacks.
